The Ukrainian National Waste Management Strategy until 2030 – which aims at curbing the presently critical waste producing and managing practices – was published at the end of 2017. It determines the administrative agenda and the course of waste management, while observing EU directives. It can also fill us with hope, since their deficiencies weigh heavily on us, too.
The Ukrainian economy still employs mostly outdated technologies, which not only produce a considerable amount of waste, but also continually recreate the problem. Its effects can clearly be observed in the environment as well as in the welfare and health of people.

Now, some 70 years later, annual plastics production is more than 300 million tonnes, and we have begun to understand the true legacy of these products: they never fully ‘disappear’ from the environment.

This large clean-up of Tisza river will stay with us for a while though
The sixth PLASTIC Cup last week attracted record breaking number of participants at the Upper Tisza river, Hungary. The traditional clean-up event was organized between Szatmárcseke and Tiszamogyorós this year, and unfortunately it broke all previous records. On the clean-up action with a 74 kilometre track, enthusiastic volunteers and registered teams collected 10 tonnes of waste, and at the end, the Cup went far away from Tisza.

The sixth Plastic Cup is starting on 4th of August
Mentioning summer and waterside makes many think of holiday and relax at lake Balaton or on a beach. But for an ever-growing part of the society, those words recall a good pirate adventure and volunteering for nature conservation: the PLASTIC Cup. This year's – altogether for the sixth occasion – 10-day waste picking derby at river Tisza will take place between 4-12 August 2018 on 70 km from Szatmárcseke to Tiszamogyorós, combined with a Transcarpathian pre-race in the days before the Cup.
