GreenPack project has been financed by the European Commission and aims to radically change the market of food trays. Research activities officially started on the 1st of December 2013 under Grant Agreement no. 605698 with the Research Executive Agency of the European Commission.
The project is coming to an end and HAEE is organizing a DEMO Session in Budapest on the 1st of July, 2019.

The Remediation and Damage Control Working Party in the Association of Environmental Enterprises has organised successful professional conferences every two years since 1999, to present the results and challenges of remediation, to share the latest R&D results and the findings of experts, and to learn about the possible financial resources for the next period. The conference planned for 2019 provides an opportunity to present the latest R&D results and technological solutions, the measuring and sampling methods for newly discovered pollutants, and the results of the investigation on environmental and health hazards at abandoned, contaminated industrial areas. The current challenges and results of the brownfield area rehabilitation and of the environmental remediation of contaminated areas will be presented through national and international case studies. Companies owning the contaminated areas, state officials, experts of public authorities and legislative bodies will participate at the conference in addition to professional organizations, experts and companies responsible for the analyzing and the implementing, and illustrious members of the academic community.
We are looking for applications in the following topics:
- presenting the research results of academies, universities and other research centres
- introducing R&D and innovative projects executed in the 2014-2020 EU funding period
- 2014-2020 Territorial and settlement development OP 2.2.0 – brownfield related tasks at local governments
- Environmental and Energy Efficiency OP 3.3 – damage control areas
- areas contaminated with chlorinated hydrocarbons, ideas for damage control
- complex damage control
- monitored natural decomposition
- observations on the remediation of fresh water, catchment plains and sediment
- possibilities for utilizing remediated areas
- observations on utilizing brownfield areas
- the afterlife of remediation
- taking and preparing samples, measuring accuracy, analytics for remediation
- brownfield investment – remediation
Presentations should last maximum 20 minutes. The Organisation Committee decides about accepting presentations.
Timeline:
Submitting the title and a short introduction (2-3 lines) and submitting a 1-page-long abstract: 30 March 2019.
Informing the applicants about the Committee’s decision:5 April 2019.

The Ukrainian National Waste Management Strategy until 2030 – which aims at curbing the presently critical waste producing and managing practices – was published at the end of 2017. It determines the administrative agenda and the course of waste management, while observing EU directives. It can also fill us with hope, since their deficiencies weigh heavily on us, too.
The Ukrainian economy still employs mostly outdated technologies, which not only produce a considerable amount of waste, but also continually recreate the problem. Its effects can clearly be observed in the environment as well as in the welfare and health of people.

Since then, the production of plastics has increased rapidly, bringing many benefits to society. Now, some 70 years later, annual plastics production is more than 300 million tonnes, and we have begun to understand the true legacy of these products: they never fully ‘disappear’ from the environment.

This large clean-up of Tisza river will stay with us for a while though
The sixth PLASTIC Cup last week attracted record breaking number of participants at the Upper Tisza river, Hungary. The traditional clean-up event was organized between Szatmárcseke and Tiszamogyorós this year, and unfortunately it broke all previous records. On the clean-up action with a 74 kilometre track, enthusiastic volunteers and registered teams collected 10 tonnes of waste, and at the end, the Cup went far away from Tisza.

The sixth Plastic Cup is starting on 4th of August
Mentioning summer and waterside makes many think of holiday and relax at lake Balaton or on a beach. But for an ever-growing part of the society, those words recall a good pirate adventure and volunteering for nature conservation: the PLASTIC Cup. This year's – altogether for the sixth occasion – 10-day waste picking derby at river Tisza will take place between 4-12 August 2018 on 70 km from Szatmárcseke to Tiszamogyorós, combined with a Transcarpathian pre-race in the days before the Cup.

We are delighted to inform you that Hungary will be hosting the 7th ASEM Sustainable Development Dialogue on “Sustainable and Integrated Water Management in the 21st century – addressing imminent challenges”, a high-profile event to be held between 11 and 12 September 2018 in Budapest. The aim of the two-day event is to promote the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals and targets related to water and sanitation, as well as to achieve progress on the implementation of the Danube-Mekong Cooperation Initiative launched by Hungary in 2012.

The global demand for water has been increasing at a rate of about 1% per year over the past decades as a function of population growth, economic development and changing consumption patterns, among other factors, and it will continue to grow significantly over the foreseeable future. Industrial and domestic demand for water will increase much faster than agricultural demand, although agriculture will remain the largest user overall. The vast majority of the growth in demand for water will occur in countries with developing or emerging economies.

European Commission awareness-rising campaign on single-use plastics
Life moves so fast that we don’t always have the time to think about the impact of the small, daily choices we make – like using a take-away coffee cup with a plastic lid or accept- ing a straw with our drink.
43% of all marine litter polluting our oceans is made up of just
10 types of single-use plastic items; food containers, take- away beverage cups and lids, cotton buds, cutlery (including plates, stirrers and straws), balloons and balloon sticks, packets and wrappers, beverage bottles, cigarette butts, sanitary products, and carrier bags. As soon as we’re finished using these items, they often end up in the natural world; washed up on beaches or submerged in our oceans. This litter negatively impacts ecosystems, biodiversity – and even human health.
This can’t continue. We need to be ready to change the way we think about single-use plastic.

“Empty plastic bottles, mixed with other waste, are dumped year by year on the river banks and are flushed downstream during flood events. This pollution could be highly visible resulting in curtains of plastic on riparian vegetation. Plastic waste also could be buried on the floodplains by fluvial sediments, or microparticulation poses an invisible threat for the wildlife and for humans. In all respects that has resulted in cross-border complaints from downstream countries. The signs of this pollution are intensely present throughout the whole Tisza basin and reach the main Danube River where this plastic waste can also be seen in the main protected areas of the Danube Delta and has an impact on the Black Sea environment.”
